A referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union is set to take place as early as June 2016.
The question of "will Britain leave the EU” has become a recent topic for members of the public. The EU (The European Union) is an economic and political union of 28 countries. Each of the countries within the Union is independent but they agree to trade under the agreements made between the nations. Why was the EU formed? The earliest member of the EU was the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), formed in the aftermath of World War II as European countries sought a way to prevent such destruction from happening again. Perhaps the greatest uncertainty associated with leaving the EU is that no country has ever done it before, so no one can predict the exact result. Nevertheless, many have considered. Countries join because they think that they will benefit from how the EU helps people who live and do business in Europe, but some people, including well-known politicians, don’t think being part of the EU is good for Britain. They want us to come out and for people to vote to leave the EU. They think Britain is better on its own. Our Prime Minister David Cameron thinks we should stay in the EU because he has agreed a “special deal” for Britain. He has spent a long time meeting with other European leaders to get some rules changed for us. Now he will try to convince British people to vote to stay in the EU. But other politicians will be urging people to vote “no”. One of the Prime Minister’s closest friends in his Government, Michael Gove, who used to be in charge of your schools, has said he thinks we should leave the EU. He says: "I believe our country would be freer, fairer and better off outside the EU.” Want to know what others think to leaving the EU? Here’s an interview with 21-year-old Kevin Bright: “I believe strongly that the EU is a great union between the members in it and leaving it brings the UK towards independence and away from the bond with Europe! Stay in the EU!” So, what do you think you'll vote? Stay in the EU? Or leave the EU? Be ready a referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union is set to take place as early as June 2016. |
